Window Frosting vs Window Graphics

Window Frosting vs Window Graphics

By 0 Comments 29th September 2026

Window frosting is for privacy. Window graphics are for selling. Frosting stops people seeing in while still letting daylight through. Graphics put your name, offers and opening hours on the glass so people walking past know what you do.

A lot of businesses end up needing both. There’s also a third option, one-way vision, that does a bit of each. This guide compares all three, including how long they last, what they cost, and the glass markings you may be legally required to have.

The three options side by side

  Frosting  Window graphics  One-way vision
What it is  Self-adhesive film that scatters light  Printed or cut vinyl on the glass  Printed vinyl full of tiny holes
Main job  Privacy  Advertising  Advertising plus some privacy
Lets daylight in?  Yes  Only where there’s no vinyl  Yes, partly
Can people see in?  No  Where there’s no vinyl, yes  Not in daylight. Yes at night when lit inside
Lifespan  5–7 years inside, 3–5 outside  3–5 years outdoors  About 1 year, up to 3 laminated
Removable?  Yes  Yes  Yes

Window frosting: privacy without losing light

Frosting is a self-adhesive film that scatters light. Daylight comes through, but nobody can see clearly through the glass. It looks like etched glass for a fraction of the cost, and unlike etched glass, it comes off when you move out or want a change.

It’s the usual choice for:

  • office meeting rooms and glass partitions
  • clinic and treatment room windows
  • ground-floor offices on busy streets
  • staff areas and toilets

You don’t have to frost the whole pane. Common options are:

  • Full coverage for complete privacy
  • A band at eye height, leaving clear glass above and below so the room doesn’t feel closed in
  • A cut logo or pattern, where your logo shows as clear glass in the frosting, or the other way round
  • Frosted text, such as room names or your opening hours on a door

Frosting usually lasts 5 to 7 years on internal glass and 3 to 5 years on external surfaces. See the finishes we fit on our window frosting page.

Window graphics: turning glass into advertising

Window graphics are printed or cut vinyl on the glass. That might be your logo, a list of services, opening hours, a phone number, or a full display for a sale or a new menu. An empty shop window is space you’re already paying rent on, and graphics turn it into advertising.

They’re the natural partner to a shop front sign. The fascia tells people who you are from across the road. The window tells them what you sell once they’re close. Our window graphics page shows the types we print.

Printed vinyl graphics usually last 3 to 5 years outdoors before fading shows. UK sign makers typically quote £100 to £500 for window lettering and graphics, depending on size.

One-way vision: the in-between option

One-way vision is printed vinyl perforated with tiny holes, typically about 1.5mm across. From outside, people see your printed graphic. From inside, your eyes look through the holes towards the brighter daylight, so you can still see out.

The film comes in different ratios, such as 50/50 or 70/30, which describe how much is vinyl and how much is holes:

Ratio  Graphic from outside  View from inside  Typical use
50/50  Lighter  Clearest  Vehicle windows
70/30  Strong  Good  Shop windows
80/20  Strongest  Dimmer  Maximum graphic impact

Two things to know before you choose it:

  1. It reverses at night. When it’s brighter inside than outside, people can see in. If you work late with the lights on, you’ll want blinds as well.
  1. It doesn’t last as long. Unlaminated, expect around a year before it fades. Laminated, up to about 3 years.

Glass markings the law may require

If you have glass doors, glass partitions or floor-to-ceiling glass, Building Regulations (Approved Document K) may require manifestation: visible markings that stop people walking into the glass.

Manifestation goes in two bands:

  • a lower band between 850mm and 1000mm from the floor
  • an upper band between 1400mm and 1600mm from the floor

It applies to glazed doors, glass within 300mm of a door, low-level glazing, and full-height glass where there’s no frame to show it’s there.

This is a good excuse to brand the glass. Frosted strips with your logo cut in do the legal job and look deliberate rather than tacked on. It’s a common part of the office branding work we do.

Which should you choose?

You want…  Choose
Privacy, with daylight  Frosting
Customers to see your offers and hours  Window graphics
A big graphic outside and a view out from inside  One-way vision
Safety markings on glass doors or partitions  Manifestation, usually frosted
A branded glass office  Frosting with a cut logo, plus manifestation
A clinic or salon that needs privacy but must still advertise  Frosting on the lower half, graphics on the top

By type of business

Shops and takeaways usually want graphics: menu highlights, offers, opening hours and a phone number, readable from the pavement.

Offices usually want frosting on meeting rooms and ground-floor windows, plus manifestation on glass doors and partitions.

Clinics, salons and treatment rooms often need both. Frost the lower part of the window for privacy, and put your name and services above it.

Fitting, care and removal

Most single rooms or shop fronts are frosted in a few hours. We can fit outside your opening hours so you don’t lose a day’s trade. Printed graphics are made in 2 to 5 working days once you’ve approved the design.

Clean the film with a soft cloth and mild soapy water, not abrasive pads or scrapers. When it’s time for a change, both frosting and vinyl peel off the glass.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between window frosting and window graphics?
Frosting is a film that gives privacy while letting light through. Window graphics are printed or cut vinyl that advertises your business.

Does window frosting block light?
No. It scatters light rather than blocking it, so rooms stay bright.

How long does window frosting last?
Around 5 to 7 years on internal glass and 3 to 5 years outside.

Can frosted window film be removed?
Yes, it peels off, which is why it suits rented premises.

Can people see through one-way window film at night?
Yes, when it’s brighter inside than outside. Use blinds if you need privacy after dark.

Is window manifestation a legal requirement?
For glazing in critical locations, such as glass doors, glass beside doors and full-height glass, Approved Document K of the Building Regulations requires it.

How much do window graphics cost?
Typically £100 to £500 for lettering and graphics, depending on size. Send a photo of your windows through our
contact page for an exact price. Our shop sign cost guide covers wider signage prices, and everything we make is on our signage services page.
