Acrylic and metal signs are the panels and plaques you see on reception walls, office doors, professional practices and building entrances. Cut to size, printed or engraved, and mounted on standoff fixings so the sign sits slightly off the wall.
They’re what a business buys when a printed poster in a frame would undersell it.
Britannia Design & Print cuts, prints, engraves and installs acrylic and metal signage from our Bordesley Green workshop. Solicitors, dental practices, accountants, clinics, offices, showrooms and shop interiors across Birmingham.
Neither is better. They’re for different jobs, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you what they have in stock.
Choose acrylic when you want colour, when the logo has lots of detail, when the sign is indoors, or when budget matters. It photographs well, it suits modern branding, and you can do a lot with layering clear and coloured sheets.
Choose metal when the sign is outdoors, when it needs to survive being touched and cleaned every day, or when the impression you want is permanence. A brushed steel plaque says something about a business that a printed acrylic one doesn’t.
Plenty of jobs use both. A brushed steel plate with acrylic detail is a common combination.
Stainless steel, comfortably. Outdoors it will still look right in fifteen years with nothing more than an occasional clean.
Powder-coated aluminium typically holds up for ten years or more before the coating starts to dull. Acrylic gives eight to ten years outdoors, though strong colours, especially reds, fade first in direct sunlight. Indoors, acrylic lasts more or less indefinitely.
Engraved text outlives printed text on any material, because there’s nothing on the surface to wear away.
Stainless steel and aluminium both handle British weather without complaint. Neither rusts. Powder-coated aluminium will eventually lose some colour depth in direct sun, but it takes years.
Two things to watch on external metal signs: the fixings and the substrate behind it. A stainless sign on steel fixings into a damp brick wall can stain the wall over time, so the fixing spec matters as much as the sign. Tell us what you’re fixing to and we’ll spec it properly.
Mild steel and brass are different. Both need finishing or they’ll patina, which some people want and most don’t.
As a rule of thumb:
3mm for small interior signs and door plates. Cheap, but it can flex on anything larger than about A4.
5mm is the standard for most interior reception and wall signs. Rigid enough not to bow, thick enough to show a proper edge.
10mm and above for large panels, external signs, or when you want a visible chunky edge as part of the look. A 10mm clear acrylic panel on standoffs reads as a premium piece of signage on its own, before you’ve printed anything on it.
For anything over about a metre wide, we’d usually recommend 10mm or a rigid backing, or the panel will bow over time.
Yes, and it’s one of the reasons acrylic dominates. Light passes through it, so you can back-light a whole panel, edge-light it so the edges glow, or halo-light a cut logo so it floats off the wall.
Metal can’t do that. If you want an illuminated metal sign, the light comes from behind the shape, or from a lit acrylic element combined with the metal.
Our LED and illuminated signs page covers the lighting options in detail.
The pattern we see in Birmingham: professional services and healthcare go metal or engraved, creative and retail businesses go acrylic and colour.
Solicitors, accountants, dental and medical practices, clinics, estate agents, offices, showrooms, gyms, salons, schools and care homes all buy these regularly. So does anyone fitting out a new office or moving premises, which is usually when the whole set gets ordered at once.
Size, material, thickness and whether the sign is printed or engraved are what move the price. A set ordered together, a reception panel with matching door signs, works out better per sign than ordering them piecemeal over a year.
Send us your logo and a rough size and we’ll quote properly. Fixings and installation are included in the price we give you.
Neither is better outright. Acrylic wins on colour, detail and cost, and it can be illuminated. Metal wins on durability, outdoor performance and the impression of permanence.
Stainless steel. Fifteen years or more outdoors with minimal care, compared with around ten for powder-coated aluminium and eight to ten for acrylic.

Reception panels, office door plates, wall logos, meeting room names, window and interior displays, and external plaques for professional practices.
Stainless steel and aluminium are both fully weatherproof and won’t rust. The fixings matter too, since the wrong ones can stain the wall behind the sign.

Yes. Acrylic can be back-lit, edge-lit or halo-lit, which is one of its main advantages over metal.
3mm for small door signs, 5mm for standard reception and wall signs, 10mm or more for large panels, external use, or a deliberately chunky edge.
Indoors, effectively indefinitely. Outdoors, eight to ten years before colours start to fade, with strong reds going first.
We cut, print, engrave and install them in-house at our Bordesley Green workshop, with no minimum order.
